FAQ for New Students

Q. When is the first day of school? When are the holidays?

A. School begins in the 2017-2018 school year on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. The complete Evergreen School District Calendar can be found on our Calendars page.

Q. When will my child get his or her schedule of classes?

A. Class schedules are available on our PowerSchool Parent Portal beginning at 5 p.m. the evening before the first day of school. For more information about how to register or update your PowerSchool account, please see our Online Registration page on our website.

Q. What school supplies do I need for the first day? Is there a supply list?

A. Unlike most elementary schools, there is no set list of supplies you will need for the first day of school at Leyva. Because each teacher has a slightly different approach, they will also have slightly different requirements. Students will receive a list of items from each teacher after school begins – typically they will have a week or so to get the required items.

Q. Does my child need a backpack? What kind?

A. Yes, your child should have a backpack. At LeyVa, your child will receive a complete set of textbooks to take home and leave at home during the year and they have another set to use in class. Therefore, they will not need to carry textbooks in their backpacks. Many kids are fine with a smaller backpack than they used in elementary school.

Q. What is the school dress code?

A: Dress Code for Leyva is:

  • NO sleeveless tops, backless tops, sheer or lace tops, or tops that expose the midsection. Undergarments should not be showing under any circumstances. Shirts must also be worn at an appropriate length, covering the mid-section and not falling below fingertip length.
  • NO slippers, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes.
  • Hats are allowed IF worn appropriately. This rule is in effect for male and female students.
  • NO inappropriate logos are allowed, which includes anything profane, vulgar, sexually suggestive, violent, drug, alcohol, tobacco or gang related.
  • Shorts and skirts must be knee length even if tights or leggings are worn.
  • Pants must be worn at the waist (no “sagging”). Students should be aware that if they cannot keep their pants up, or if the pant waist is determined to be too low, it is considered “sagging” and must be corrected.
  • To ensure safety on campus, no red or blue clothing or backpacks are allowed. This includes maroon and royal/navy blue items (except blue denim).
  • Other personal items to be monitored are notebooks, backpacks, belts and belt buckles. In regard to backpacks, notebooks, and binders, they must be free of any writing except for the owner’s name. In our efforts to curb graffiti, permanent markers, such as Sharpies, are not to be brought to school.
  • The administration reserves the right to use discretion to deem other items as inappropriate or disruptive to the learning process since fashion trends and styles change with such regularity.

Q. Where can I get PE clothes? Do I have to get them from the school?

A. Your child will bring home a form from school during the first week explaining the PE clothing requirements and you will have the opportunity to order PE clothes and a lock for your child’s assigned PE locker at that time. Your child will not be expected to dress out in PE clothes until the date stated on the form. Guidelines will also be provided if you would prefer to buy your own PE clothes.

Q. What is the daily class schedule?

A. School starts at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:17 p.m. The schedule is the same every day unless there is an assembly, special event or it is a minimum day. See the Bell Schedule page for a detailed schedule.

Q. How does school drop-off and pick-up work?

A. There will be no busing between home and the school. Students will need to be driven or otherwise arrange for their own transportation to and from school. The district is in the process of compiling solutions to ease congestion. Some ideas include walking to school or organizing carpools. We are strongly suggesting that parents arrange carpools or have their children walk to school. We are planning to roll out a plan of designated drop off and pick up locations to minimize traffic on campus and aid in safety for all students. we also plan to create safe walking routes. Please work with your friends and neighbors to arrange carpools or walking groups if possible.

Q. If my child forgets something, can I bring it to them?

A. LeyVa and Bulldog Tech have a “No Rescue” policy, meaning that a forgotten item will need to be addressed by your child with their teacher. This is done to prepare them for high school, to teach personal responsibility and to encourage respect for their parents’ time. If, however, you need to get your child something (like a lunch) there is a bookcase in the office where you can drop the item.
