State Dashboard gets The Conversation Started

Principal's message

The 2018 California School Dashboard was published this week. The Dashboard is designed to track school and district improvement using a number of key academic performance, engagement, and school climate indicators:

  • English language arts
  • Mathematics
  • English language development
  • Chronic absenteeism
  • Suspension rates

According to the CA Department of Education, "The Dashboard helps us all – parents, families, students, teachers – see how well our schools and students are doing and where improvement is needed." The data is coded with a series 0f colors from low to high: red (R), orange (O), yellow (Y), green (G), and blue (B). All student data is collected, but only demographic subgroups with significant percentages are reported.

So, what does the Dashboard show for LeyVa's 2017-2018 performance?

Academic Performance Academic Dashboard measures English language arts and mathematics uses the annual state assessment (CAASPP). This assessment measures some key Common Core Standards. The arrows indicate the direction of the growth based on the previous year.

English language learners (30.5% of LeyVa students) take an additional assessment (ELPAC). This assessment is new and does not have a state indicator level this year.

Academic Engagement Engagement is measured by the state solely by absenteeism. This is done by compiling excused and unexcused absences and tardies (more than 30 minutes). When that number reacher 10% a child is considered chronically absent for that school year. It's important to be at school everyday. In this case, the goal is to decrease (↓) the number.

Conditions and Climate

One indicator for school climate is suspension rates. The percentage of students who received at least a one day suspension is collected. Like absenteeism, the goals is to decrease (↓).

The Dashboard offers a starting place for goal setting and actions to support continuous improvement. Survey, local assessments, and other measures also support our work. Our school plan will reflect these data and actions to improve.
