Students in fifth and sixth grades participate in a four day unit on Growth and Development where they will learn about the endocrine system and changes that occur with their bodies. curriculum and videos for this unit are available to review at Silver Oak. Please call the front office to make an appointment.

Parents and students are invited to join us at our end of the year Open House & Art Show on May 23. The Art Show begins at 5:00 p.m. and the Open House begins at 5:30 p.m. This is a wonderful time to celebrate with your children the projects, writing, art and other classwork they have accomplished throughout their school year. It is also a great time to meet teachers and visit classrooms in the grade your child will be in next year.

Consider Making a Difference in Your Child's School. Silver Oak School Site Council (SSC) plays an important role in decision-making our school. Our SSC meets 5-6 times a year and is made up of a group of teachers, parents and staff who work with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. As our Silver Oak girls prepare for their 5K run on May 18, they are also organizing a donations drive to benefit StandUp for Kids. You can participate by donating non-perishable food/snack items, toiletries and more. Drop off your donations in the boxes outside the office/multipurpose room now through Monday, May 20. Our Project Cornerstone book title for April was is "One", by Kathryn Otoshi - a story about acceptance, tolerance, and ultimately standing up for yourself or others. The book for May is "The Recess Queen" by Alexis O'Neill. This story also covers standing up for yourself, as well as conflict resolution skills.

This June marks the end of a legacy for three of Silver Oak's original and beloved staff members. Mr. Bill Laraway, Mrs. Kim Roberts and Mrs. Lori Murnin are retiring at the end of this school year. The three of them have over 86 years in education and 65 years teaching at Silver Oak with every minute of every day dedicated to supporting the growth of our students. From May 13-24, Silver Oak students in grades 3-6 will join students throughout the state to take the annual California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, the state's academic testing program during the month of May. Please make sure to schedule appointments and other activities that may take your child away from school around the testing dates. Congratulations to Mrs. Lori Murnin for her nomination for the Super Teacher Award by her student Lauren N. who authored a winning essay/poem for the Super Teacher Contest at San Jose Dental Specialists. The local dental office sponsored the contest for students to share how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them.

This is it! This is the last month that you can turn in Box Tops. Check your backpacks, check your garages, check your pantries for those hidden box tops. Return all your Box Tops before May 30 for your classroom to get credit and be in the runningg to win a Pizza Party. The Silver Oak Girls on the Run (GOTR) teams finished their practice 5K on Monday, April 29th. After 7 weeks of lessons and running, the girls were energized, joyful and ready for the challenge! Smiles all around. The 2019 GOTR season culminates in a larger 5K run for GOTR Silicon Valley on Saturday, May 18th at Vasona Park. Our two Silver Oak teams will be participating. We are seeking new members for the Measure M Citizens' Oversight Committee. Measure M funds are designated to upgrade and construct classrooms and hands-on science and technology labs and restrooms, help increase campus security and improve overall energy efficiency. It's that time of year again, science fair is upon us. Grades 1st thru 6th will be participating. Most students will complete all of the work in class and or in the STEAM Lab. 12 winners will be selected to represent Silver Oak at the district level on Thursday, March 21 at Quimby Oak. The winners and some classes will also display their projects at Silver Oak's 4th annual STEAM Night & Makers Faire on Thursday, March 7.
